Sigma Chi Sweethearts: The Women Behind the Brotherhood

What role do women play in the history of an all-male fraternity? In Sigma Chi—quite a meaningful one.

Few traditions in Greek life are as enduring or recognizable as The Sweetheart of Sigma Chi. Popularized through recordings and films in the early 20th century, the song remains a timeless symbol of the Fraternity. While co-creator Byron Stokes (Albion 1913) noted that its lyrics weren’t inspired by a single individual, the spirit behind it reflects the many women who have supported Sigma Chi throughout its history.

At the University of Florida’s Gamma Theta Chapter, that legacy runs deep. Over the years, our Sweethearts have included accomplished scholars, influential campus leaders, Homecoming Queens—and even Academy Award Winning Actress Faye Dunaway.  Each has played a meaningful role in shaping the culture, character, and impact of our Brotherhood on campus.
